As a software engineer on our team, you will help us find solutions that transform terabytes of healthcare information into actionable data.

Humedica, now Optum Analytics, is an innovative venture capital backed healthcare technology company with offices in Boston. OptumLabs is the health care industrys first open collaborative research and innovation center. We are looking for a software engineer with experience in Natural Language Processing to form a bridge between our two organizations. At Optum Analytics, youll have access to healthcare information that spans the continuum of careincluding EHRs, Practice Management Systems, and claims. Our data are comprehensive and account for 65M patient lives in the U.S. At OptumLabs, youll work with thought-leading partners to enable innovation and ground-breaking research. At both organizations, our goal is to improve patient care and patient value.
We are looking for engineers who are excited by the idea of Big Data and the challenges it poses. Your primary responsibilities involve working on a team of NLP engineers to prototype and develop new tools for data analysis and QA. You will work with researchers at OptumLabs and clinical experts from their partner network to produce NLP output in a range of domain areas such as Alzheimers disease, low back pain, substance use disorders, cancer, etc., defining the projects and see them through to completion. You should understand the importance of test-driven development throughout the entire software lifecycle and be able to work in an Agile framework. Above all, you should be curious about what is possible in healthcare with the right data and tools.

Required Qualifications

Degree in computer science or related field

Solid programming experience in Python, C++, or Java

Experience with machine learning algorithms, including the ability to develop prototypes and refine them based on client feedback

Experience with range of Natural Language Processing techniques, including text processing, text annotation, regular expressions, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with large-scale, open-source frameworks

Experience with test-driven development

Familiarity/experience with Agile software development

Strong communication skills
